The boys had walked their neighborhood with no signs of life. They gathered back at Sevyon’s house. It was only 1 P.M. The boys had been slient since checking the last house. Sevyon decided to break the silence.
“We should see if the news is on.” He said. They had already tried to phone 911, but the phone line was dead. The power must have been dead to because the tv didn’t come on. They sat in silence some more.
“What happened last night was local only right?” Rangorax asked himself out loud.
“There’s no way on earth that these creatures spread all over the world and destroyed everything.” Sevyon replied.
“There’s no way on earth it could have happened locally either.” Rangorax countered. “A black portal just opened up in the sky and odd, black, ant-like aliens poured out if it and started eating everyone and destroying everything… No one would have believed that was possible this morning. It sounds too much like something off the Sci-Fi channel or a video game.”
“Don’t be so doomsdayish man. Everyone can’t be dead… It’s not like we are the only ones alive… are we?” Sevyon asked. They both sat in silence. “We have to look for more survivors. Let’s get a vehicle.” The boys went down to Sevyon’s garage where Sevyon’s mom’s minivan was still in tact. His dad’s pickup which had been parked outside the house was demolished. It had probably created the explosion Sevyon heard earlier.
The boys got in the van.
“So, where to?” Sevyon asked.
“Just start driving man. Look for the least damaged part of town you can find.” Rangorax suggested. Sevyon took his suggestion.
After driving around for nearly 2 hours, they were on the complete opposite side of town than when they first started. Everywhere they went, things looked the same. Devastation everywhere.
“Let’s try this street” Rangorax suggested.
“Whatever…” Sevyon replied. He pulled the van down the street and continued the drive. The boys drove slowly with the windows down so they could hear any signs of life. So far, that too had produced no success. What had once been a completely peaceful neighborhood full of children playing hide-and-go-seek and similar games had now become a ruin. Rangorax was about to suggest another area of town when he heard a noise. It sounded like a human voice. Sevyon didn’t seem to notice it. He heard it again.
“Help!” it cried from somewhere down the street where they had previously been driving. Sevyon heard it this time. He shifted the van into reverse and sped towards the sound. There was a woman, in her late 30’s to early 40’s standing out in the front lawn of one of the houses. Sevyon pulled into the driveway. The woman was covered in dirt, sweat, and blood. She had obviously done her fair share of battle with the creatures. When the boys got out of the car she rushed them as if they were the last living people on earth. If the boys would have thought about it, they might have been.
“Come inside! Hurry!” she said while she pulled them towards the house. The boys had a hard time staying on their feet the lady was going so fast. When they got inside (the obliteration was identical to every house they’d seen so far) she led them down a hallway. All the doors in the hallway were smashed down, but one remained in tact. The woman banged on the door and called to someone on the other side. “Let me in! It’s your mother and I have others!” There was noise on the other side of the door as if large objects were being moved. The door opened a short time later. The greeter was a young boy about 10 years old. His face was also dirtied as if he had been through quite a struggle. When he saw the other two boys his face lit up bright.
“They have guns! Can I use one?” He asked eagerly. His mother laughed.
“Hello Johan, I’m glad to see you to” she said while she gave him a hug. Johan lauged. “Where is your sister?”
“She’s downstairs sleeping. She’s tired and her arm is bleeding pretty bad.” The mother immediately rushed past her son down the stairs and around the corner.
“So what’s your names?” Johan asked.
“Well, I’m Sevyon”
“And I’m Rangorax.” The two replied.
“We’ll my name’s Johan and I’m the man of this house. My daddy left when I was little and ever since, I’ve had to be the man.” He said this with a smile on his face, but the boys felt pity for the young child absent of his father. “The woman you met was my mom. Her name is Mommy. I’m not allowed to call her by her real name. My sister is downstairs and her name is Kerjov. She’s 15 and gets pimples that she doesn’t…”
“How about we go see her?” Rangorax interrupted the youngster.
“Okay, but she’ll be mad because she’s all dirty and she doesn’t like boys to see her like that.” Johan said while he walked down the stairs and motioned for the other two to follow him. The duo followed the young boy around the corner which opened up into a large room. On a couch in the corner was the girl that the boys assumed to be Kerjov. She was either sleeping or unconscious. Her arm was tied up in a blood-soaked towel. Mommy was standing over her trying to stop the bleeding by applying pressure. The boys walked closer. Sevyon was about to say something when…
CRASH! Something flew down the stairs. It was the door that used to block the top. Johan screamed.
“We have to get back to the van!” Sevyon yelled above the noise of the creatures toppling down the stairs. “Is there some other way to get outside?” He asked Johan’s mother. She pointed across the room to a glass door which led to a walk about patio. “Let’s go!” He ordered. Rangorax picked up Kerjov and Johan’s mom picked up her son. Sevyon turned the safety off his pistol. “Hey Rangor…” He started to ask, but Rangorax had read his mind. Rangorax pulled out his pistol and threw it to his friend. “I’ll cover you guys!” he called over his shoulder while he turned and faced the beasts. The others turned and ran. “Well… this is my battle now…” He said to himself.
